Step one: Get in touch
I need you to tell me about what you are hoping for. Who is the portrait of, your reasons for wanting the work done and your attachments to the person are also helpful. Do you have particular preferences for colours, shapes, or must the portrait include one thing or another. I like to understand your connection to the person. If you aren't able to do this or haven't thought about this then that is also ok! I will certainly draw upon my own experiences and feeling for your project.
Second: determining size & budget
After a bit of communicating what you have in mind I will need some idea of your budget or a canvas size. Size determines budget and vice versa. We then come to an agreement over the briefing, financing, deadlines, framing etc.
Thirdly: reference imagery
I need nice photos! If I am unable to meet the subject to study him/her in person and take a few reference photos I will need to rely on you to provide these. It is helpful to have at least one good photograph to work from. The more references the merrier! The higher the image quality the better! If you plan on taking some images for me to paint from, I can assist you in the process.
Now the painting can begin! Whoohoo!
Depending on my schedule & what we agreed on in the briefing stage, you will receive communication from me detailing progress over the coming days/weeks/months!
