Nostagic longing for a paradise lost...
About The Birds
Do you remember that house down the road, maybe you even lived in it? It was old, made from wood and cast iron, not plastic and ply. From another era. A time of great romanticism. Before the modern machine, just before the industrialised world was born and great World Wars, what were they? This is the time period which inspired my Birds project.
Nostalgia nostalgia! Nostalgia for something I never experienced personally (neither did you), yet long for in my heart.
I come from a long line of bird watchers too. Part of my ancestry is English, need I say more? Picture this: A young man in his khaki safari suit geekily clutching a pair of binoculars on the plains of Southern Africa. His top lip raised in a squint revealing his English pearls as his mouth gapes open at the prospects. But wait! What is this?! He spots what might be in the distance a red and green trogon amongst the thorny scrubland... You get the idea.
I did live in an old house once. It had splendid ivory wallpaper from floor to 12foot ceiling in the lounge room. It was intoxicating being in there with only small windows and a door for air. I'd never experienced that before and being a young impressionable at the time it filled me with longing and desire to see that era come alive and off the walls.
